PRE-PRODUCTION
To get the creative juices flowing, I started copying the script onto paper, slowly building some visual ideas. These ideas were transferred to stick-figures on sticky notes as I tried to connect the individual scenes. This is why this one minute short has so many scenes.
CHARACTER DESIGN
This part I kept very straightforward. Simple and organic shapes, inspired by Religious People by Sukanto Debnath (2021) and The Art of The Secret of Kells by Cartoon Saloon (2009). With these sources, I tried to push my own style in another direction with the sole purpose of becoming more versatile.
The storyboard was basically a sophisticated version of the stick-version notes. In the animatic I did the most design work; character and background design. I mostly used the line tool and symmetrical structures for efficiency.
BACKGROUND
To match the compensation for this commission, I decided on a manageable animation style and instead focussed some of my time on visual development, since I lack confidence in that area. I chose strong color themes that matched well with the playful lines paired with analogue textures (like paper, watercolor and polka dots) to add consistency in the different scenes.
