PRE PRODUCTION
My goal with this animation was simple: explore another style outside my own signature and the previous animation (see: 2 voor 12 (1)) and push it real hard.
This style is inspired from the title sequences by Saul Bass. He achieved strong descriptive visuals with minimal shapes and colors. His style is bold, inventive and minimalistic. I found his strong shapelanguage a fitting inspiration for Mohammed Hatta’s story.
To start, I copy the script onto paper and transfer the visuals onto sticky notes. This method was quite difficult because I wished for more abstract interpretations on the given voice over. I did, eventually, succeed in some. The most fun part was connecting these images through dynamic transitions.
The three colors are based on the Perhimpoenan Indonesia flag (red, white, black). Limiting myself with these colors with no outlines proved difficult, especially with background color changes; I did not want to use gradient transitions. This puzzle took most of my time whilst making the storyboard.
The animatic was basically a polished version of the storyboard with all of the movements decided.
